Changing the Role of Communtiy Media Centers
If decentralized technologies such as BitTorrent become the harbinger of future media consumption and distribution, what happens to the practice of communtiy media centers as low-level gatekeepers? If one of the roles of CMCs is to funnel content from producer to channel, what is left when all content can been funnelled from one to many or many2many via P2P, VOD, and TiVo type mechanisms? What happens to public space?
Coralie Wilson from NATOA touched on these questions during her recent presentation at the ACM national Conference in Tampa as part of the "Caution: Convergence Ahead" panel. The DigitalBicycle is more than a set of technologies, it is a dialogue about the shifting role of advocates for public communication spaces. I hope others consider these issues as we move full steam ahead.
